European Calorimeter Array EURECA

The motivation to build a prototype cryogenic imaging spectrometer is to demonstrate technological readiness for future mission opportunities the ESA X-ray observatory XEUS (>2015) or the NASA X-ray observatory Constellation-X (2017).

Prototype elements:
         ADR cooler with radiation entrance window
         X-ray transmission and IR UV blocking filters for entrance window
         5 x 5 TES-based prototype sensor array
         FDM read-out electronics representative for a space mission
         Instrument control unit with control and data acquisition software (PSI contribution)
         Data analysis software
         Extensive system testing at suitable X-ray beams
         Executed in 2005 2007 (2.5 years) in collaboration with suitable partners
                         Parallel development and verification of TES-key issues (research on resolution and pixel size)
                        Parallel development of STJ technology by ESA in collaboration with the consortium partners
                        Parallel development of magnetic micro-calorimeters by group in Heidelberg (Christian Enns)
